Temporary Runway Restriction at Kiunga Airport During Upgrade Works

The National Airports Corporation (NAC) has announced a temporary runway restriction at Kiunga Airport as part of ongoing aerodrome upgrade works under MOWP Stages 5 to 8.

Upgrade works at the Western Province airport are progressing steadily, with airside and landside components currently approximately 35 per cent complete. Stages 1 to 4 are scheduled for completion by the end of February 2026, paving the way for the next phase of runway works to commence on 1 March 2026.

From 1 March 2026, the airport’s available runway length will be temporarily reduced from 1,200 metres to 490 metres for a minimum period of four months. As a result, Regular Public Transport (RPT) services, including Dash 8-100 series aircraft operations, will be suspended during this period. The aerodrome will remain operational for smaller General Aviation aircraft.

NAC acknowledged that the temporary restriction, expected to run from March to June 2026, will affect passenger travel and cargo movements in and out of Kiunga. However, the corporation emphasised that the works are essential to maintain aviation safety standards and ensure the long-term reliability and continued operation of the airport.

The runway upgrade forms part of a broader infrastructure investment aimed at strengthening aviation connectivity in Western Province and supporting future regional development.

NAC has advised travellers, airline operators, businesses and stakeholders to take note of the temporary changes and make alternative arrangements where necessary. Work schedules remain subject to weather conditions, and any changes will be communicated accordingly.

The statement was approved for release on Thursday, 26 February 2026, by Acting Managing Director and CEO Dominic Kaumu, ML OBE.
