Mt Hagen Airport has achieved a significant milestone in aviation safety, with six senior firefighters from the Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) Division successfully attaining their Instructional Technique Rating (ITR) certification.

Fire Chief for Rescue and Firefighting Services at the Mt Hagen Airport- Larson Buna said, β€œIn an aircraft emergency, there are no second chances. Our ability to save lives and protect property depends on how prepared we are. That is why training goes beyond compliance requirements. It ensures our officers remain physically, mentally, and operationally ready to respond effectively when every second counts.” This qualification empowers them to: β€’ Plan, and deliver training sessions β€’ Conduct drills and simulation exercises β€’ Prepare training and assessment With this achievement, Duty Fire Officers and Potential Officers who had undergone the training are now certified Station Trainers. This ensures effective training delivery, accurate record keeping for audits, and a sustainable system where seasoned Aviation Firefighters pass on vital knowledge and skills to the next generation in their rank & file. The program mirrors training delivered at Madang Airport and will be extended to Nadzab Tomodachi International Airport, Goroka Airport, and Tokua Airport between November 2026 and February 2027. This milestone reaffirms NAC’s commitment to advancing aviation safety excellence and ensuring its operations remain aligned with ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs).
