The National Airports Corporation (NAC) and key emergency stakeholders in the East Sepik Province, successfully conducted an emergency response exercise at the Wewak (Boram) airport on Friday 2nd October 2026.

Led by the NAC Wewak Airport team, the exercise began earlier in the day with a Table Top Exercise, where stakeholders walked through their roles, responsibilities and emergency response procedures.

This was followed in the afternoon by an Airport Emergency drill simulating their response to an aircraft crash at the airport.

Participating organizations included the Royal PNG Constabulary in East Sepik Province, the PNG Fire Service, the East Sepik Provincial Health Authority, Samaritan Aviation, Air Niugini and PNG Air. NAC’s contracted security personnel also took part, alongside volunteers who played the role of casualties.

During the emergency exercise, stakeholders assessed their response and preparedness, the quality of coordination and communication between agencies, and any challenges and weak areas. They also identified and discussed recommendations for improvement.

At the post-exercise debrief, NAC Airport Rescue Fire Fighting officer, Mr Sent Tenta thanked all stakeholders for their time and commitment. He said that constructive feedback shared during the debrief will help identify areas for improvement and ensure that all agencies are better prepared.

The Aerodrome Emergency Plan (AEP) exercise is conducted in line with the PNG civil aviation regulatory requirements. In the event of a real emergency, every agency involved will know where to go, what to do, and how to work together in performing their specific roles and responsibilities.

Exercises like this one are vital to refining Emergency Response Plans, strengthening communication between responding agencies, and upholding civil aviation safety standards at NAC’s airports across the country.
